The Ironclad: Strength Multipliers & Exhaust Mechanics in STS2

The Ironclad returns in Slay the Spire 2 with refined damage multipliers, improved early sustain, and deeper co-op frontlining capabilities. While beginner climbers often treat him as a straightforward brawler, optimal high-Ascension play requires precise arithmetic across Strength scaling, card exhaust compression, and Vulnerable maintenance.

1. The Mathematics of Strength Scaling

Strength in Slay the Spire 2 directly adds flat damage to every individual attack damage tick. Therefore, multi-hit attacks enjoy exponential scaling with Strength compared to slow, single-hit attacks.

Damage Formula with Strength & Vulnerable

Damage = Floor[ (Base Damage + Strength) * Vulnerable Multiplier (1.50) ] * Hits

Single Strike (e.g. Strike+ 9 dmg)

At +6 Strength with Vulnerable: Floor[ (9 + 6) * 1.5 ] = 22 damage. (Gain: +13 damage)

Multi-Hit (e.g. Twin Strike+ 7x2 dmg)

At +6 Strength with Vulnerable: Floor[ (7 + 6) * 1.5 ] * 2 = 38 damage. (Gain: +24 damage)

This scaling divergence dictates drafting priorities: once Spot Weakness, Demon Form, or Inflame enters your deck, the marginal value of multi-strike attacks doubles, making cards like Sword Boomerang and Pummel premium lethal tools.

2. Exhaust Engine: Deck Compression as Virtual Card Draw

New players frequently fear the Exhaust keyword, viewing it as the destruction of valuable resources. In mathematical game theory, Exhaust is the ultimate deck-thinning engine. By removing low-impact Basic Strikes and Defends during a prolonged encounter, your remaining deck consists solely of accelerated scaling answers.

  • True Grit+ and Burning Pact: Target removal of clunky status cards (Dazed, Slimed, Void) while advancing card cycle.
  • Dark Embrace: Converts every exhausted card into a free card draw (+1 net hand size). Combined with Corruption, every defensive skill becomes 0-cost, instantly drawing another card and cycling through the entire deck in a single turn.
  • Feel No Pain: Generates 3 (4 upgraded) passive Block whenever any card is exhausted. Against multi-card curse encounters (such as Sentries or Slimes), this single power solves all defensive checks.

3. High-Ascension Boss Breakpoints for Ironclad

To defeat Act 2 and Act 3 bosses on Ascension 10+, your deck must fulfill three distinct combat profiles:

Turn 1–2 Frontloaded Block

Enemies like the Champ and Collector hit for 24–36 damage within the first three turns. You must draft at least two copies of Power Through, Flame Barrier, or Impervious to survive the ramp-up phase without taking catastrophic chip damage.

Exponential Scaling Win Condition

Linear damage (basic attacks) cannot defeat Act 3 encounters with 500+ HP. You require an exponential multiplier: either Strength scaling combined with Heavy Blade, or massive Block buildup paired with Body Slam+.

Artifact Stripping for Vulnerable

Because Bash costs 2 Energy, having cheap 0-cost attacks (like Anger or Clothesline) to strip Artifact charges before applying Vulnerable is essential for maximizing your team's burst turn.

4. Co-op Role & Synergy Pairing

In Slay the Spire 2 co-op, Ironclad's high base health (80 HP) and innate sustain from Burning Blood designate him as the natural defensive anchor. When paired with the Silent, Ironclad should focus on applying global Vulnerable, while Silent capitalizes with 0-cost Shiv bursts. When paired with the Necrobinder, Ironclad's high physical damage softens enemies down into the lethal Doom threshold for instant execution.
